How to keep your VW alive Jul 21, 2010 This book is as detailed as is required for a mechanically inclined amateur to perform a professional rebuild. There are many do's and don'ts and gotcha's explained that would otherwise have to be learned by experience.I also recommend "How to rebuild your Volkswagen air cooled engine" as a companion. With both you cannot go wrong.
A nudge in the right direction Jul 10, 2010 I owned this book during my formative years, in the 80's, with my first car, a 1973 Superbeetle. As some reviewers have said, this should not be your only repair manual, but then again, I have never seen a repair manual for any car that could stand alone. I've always found that, for instance, having both a Haynes and a Chilton's is often extremely helpful. The steps that one book skips over the other book might cover in detail. THIS book, however, achieves something that no other repair manual does: it teaches you that you can fix your car and keep it happy. It teaches you to think about the problems in a new way. The most difficult repairs involve problems that you can't understand. Sometimes just knowing how something works turns a difficult and expensive repair into a quick, simple, and elegant fix. This book will help a novice achieve a sense of calm, and of competence, when it is most needed. If you did only have a budget for one manual, I'd make it this one. It'll help you fix your car, it'll help you love your car, and as a bonus, it'll give you the tools you need to face the big challenges in your life with a sense of confidence. Thanks, John!
A Classic May 20, 2010 I bought this book around 1980 for my Beetle convertible. Best single thing I ever did. I'm not mechanically inclined at all but this book had me doing a fair amount of repairs myself.
In my opinion the hand drawn pictures is one of the best ideas I've seen for a repair manual. Too often those grainy grey/black pictures in most manuals just leave me confused. If you're not familiar with what you're looking at it's just one big grey mess you're looking at.
His writing style also made everything seem possible and game me the confidence to actually try some repairs. I also just picked up a lot of general knowledge that applies in general to most cars, I really learned a lot from this book, and all of it painless (almost painless anyway).
Whoever has a bad review for this book is crazy! May 02, 2010 I love this book! If you notice all the bad reviews EVERYONE so far, says that they come back to this book all the time. With a great reference book like this you can see why. No, it's not perfect. Hmmm, just like a VW. However, I haven't seen a book or manual that is. PERIOD. I have a 72 bus and I've used this book more than any other. Just read it to gain knowledge. Even when I don't need it I'll still sit and read. It's a fun book. Has helped me and my friends, all who own at least 3 or more Vdubs a piece. Old school and new school heads. All would recommend this book. Yes you should get a manual for yours like Bentley or something but this book being a classic, is filled with great stuff! HIGHLY recommend it!
How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive Apr 25, 2010 This book changed my life. Totally Zen. I was 22 years old and the year was 1978. I never met John (the author) but I feel like I know him as a very good friend. I learned every thing about my VW and everything about the philosophy of life. The skill to do, comes from doing....... and John taught me that and more. I no longer have my original copy, but I remember the stories John used to share. Starting the engine from a raw choke on a freezing morning...... just .allow the engine to run and warm about the time it takes to roll your first cigarette of the morning as you set in the drivers seat. Or if you slip on a nut and rap your knuckles on the frame......... don't get mad and scream.......... just cradle the wrench ever so gentle in the palm of your hand........ feel the steel and the weight........ give it time........ give it to 10 and all will be well again.
This book is about self-decipline, about believing in yourself...... about self-relience. That you can basically pull over anywhere on the road and overhaul an engine. You'll get there when you get there. For John, it was never about the destination....... it was always about the journey. He was a Traveler........ and a true Traveler has no fixed plans, and is never intent on arriving. John, where ever you are....... I know you're having a ball!
