Speed Secrets - Highly Recommended Jul 19, 2010 This book was getting a lot of discussion and recommendations at a DE I attended recently -- and after reading it I can see why! I can also see why most of the reviews here are highly positive.
I have also read Skip Barber's "Going Faster" and found it highly informative as well. "Going Faster" contains more technical details which should be expected as this is the "text book" for their schools. I would recommend reading both -- I don't know of anything you can buy for this price that will make your car faster.
Even if you just watch road course racing on TV, reading this book is useful. For example in Chapter 11, "Racing, Passing, and Traffic," the author talks about "presenting" which helped me understand the tactics involved in passing. I'm a DE guy with an old Autocross background and no plans to go wheel-to-wheel racing, but finer points like this make watching racing much more interesting.
Highly recommended.
I recommend the series to my race school students every time Sep 17, 2009 I've been instructing for a while now, now mainly Formula Campus and Formula Renault, Ferrari etc...and i recommend these book EVERY time to new students. The ones who bought them, even just the first two, said that it was 'unbelievable how much it taught me about race driving'...for $24 for books 1&2, they will pay for themselves about a thousand times over in terms of improving your driving, and cover all basic race theory, lines, maximizing traction, driving on the limit, etc, etc, etc. Books 1 &2 are like your own 3-day race school in an easy-to-read format, but also go beyond that [obviously in 3 days there is only so much class time/theory you can get]. i don't think there's anything in the world of racing that could give you more for $24 [for the first two books]. Obviously there are way more technical books out there, but the Speed Secrets books are by FAR the best books to start with...Speed Secrets: Professional Race Driving TechniquesSpeed Secrets II: More Professional Race Driving Techniques
Best book on race car driving I have seen Aug 04, 2009 Bentley's book is the best I have read on the subject. It is nicely written (not obvious in this subject matter), the language being very clear and direct. Although different people learn in different ways this seems to be a book for everyone. The emphasis is however on formula (or at least rear engined) cars. Now, that Ross Bentley has enough distinct speed secrets to fill up five more books is frankly a stretch. I am reading the second one and, although perhaps at a more sophisticated level, the message is more or less the same. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand (if not try) how to drive a race car at speed. It is certainly worth the money and the time.
Concise and helpful read Jul 11, 2009 I bought this book along with Going Faster, and have definitely gravitated toward this book. It's not quite as elementary and wordy. It's organized around propositional statements - "Speed Secrets" - which are supported with theory and example. Great read
Recommended to read! Aug 28, 2008 This book is good, easier to understand, the author did a good job in explaining techniques and tips. Highly recommended!
